Multiplex Mafia and Film piracy?

We often hear of the term Multiplex mafia. While that is a debatable issue, the focus of this post is on the effect it has on film piracy.

Multiplex movie is a big drain on the finances of an average movie goer. No doubt, the experience is good but look at it this way. You have to drive to the mall, park in a complex parking lot after paying a hefty amount, then take a crowded elevator (mostly) and wait for your movie to start. Kids love the nachos, pop corn, coke etc served at the seat but denting a significant hole in your pocket. A simple movie outing for 4 costs about 2000 rupees and if you are a regular movie buff then it is a budget of 8 to 10k per month!!

So, why would would anyone spend that kind of money except on large format large scale hit movies. As you know such large scale movies come once in a while and therefore the movie goer tries to watch the movie on a streaming platform (after a short wait) or take the illegal path and watch it online.

In the former case the producer would get some money but in the later case, he obviously gets nothing. Everyone blames film piracy but don’t you think that it is the Multiplex Mafia that is pushing people to streaming & piracy platforms?

The stars who keep appealing to us not to view movies online don’t reduce their fees (and help the producer), multiplexes – will show the movies they want, won’t reduce ticket or parking fees, won’t reduce food prices but they expect the viewer to be compliant and pay for the tickets & food prices as decided by them?

How does it work? IT WON’T! The current multiplex model is bound to fail and It is just a question of time.

So folks at the multiplexes, make the movies going experience more affordable to increase your foot falls!
